As part of our "Saving 3000 Pets at Risk in 2025" campaign, Tandem’s story is one that deeply resonates with our mission. This brave young beagle is an example of the love, care, and determination it takes to save animals in dire situations. Through our partnership with Kentucky Saving Them Together, we’re working tirelessly to help pets like Tandem who are often overlooked but so deserving of a second chance.
Abandoned and Afraid
Tandem’s life began like many hunting dogs, full of promise as a loyal companion in the field. But his story took a heartbreaking turn when a fungal disease, common in dogs exposed to untreated conditions like old soil, left him blind. His owner, unable or unwilling to care for a dog who could no longer hunt, attempted a makeshift treatment with random eye drops that worsened Tandem’s condition.
As his vision failed and his health deteriorated—marked by coughing, sneezing, and flu-like symptoms—Tandem was abandoned at a high-kill shelter in Eastern Kentucky. Overwhelmed and under-resourced, the shelter was a frightening environment for the young dog. Blind and scared, Tandem struggled to eat, his thin frame becoming frailer by the day.
A Tender Rescue
When Kentucky Saving Them Together was contacted by the shelter about Tandem, they knew immediate action was necessary. The young beagle’s condition was dire, but from the moment he was picked up, it was clear that Tandem was special. Despite his fear and fragile state, his gentle nature shone through, making it impossible not to root for his recovery.
Too scared to walk on his own, Tandem had to be carried to the car. His little body trembled with fear, his heart pounding as he was placed on his rescuer’s lap. But as the miles passed, a remarkable transformation began. Tandem started to relax, soothed by the warmth of human touch and the first feelings of safety he had likely ever known. By the end of the drive, his fear had melted away, and this once-trembling dog was snoring peacefully in his rescuer’s arms.
Hope and Healing
Upon arrival at the vet, Tandem’s diagnosis revealed the root of his blindness: a fungal disease common in hunting dogs exposed to untreated, old soil. While devastating, the news brought hope—his condition could be treated. The veterinary team immediately began a regimen of medication and supportive care, and Tandem’s recovery journey began.
Over the following weeks, Tandem showed incredible resilience. His appetite returned, and the coughing and sneezing that once wracked his small body began to fade. Even more miraculous, the vet observed signs that Tandem was regaining partial eyesight. As his health improved, so did his spirit. Tandem began wagging his tail, seeking affection, and showing gratitude with gentle nudges and cuddles.
This once-overlooked hunting dog was finally thriving, revealing the sweet and loving personality that had been hidden beneath his fear and illness.
A Bright Future Ahead
Tandem’s journey isn’t over yet, but his future looks brighter every day. Once fully healthy, he’ll make the trip to Michigan to join Bubbles the Blind Beagle Rescue, an organization dedicated to rehabilitating blind beagles. This rescue specializes in giving dogs like Tandem the care and support they need to adjust to their new lives, and it’s the perfect place for him to continue his recovery.
At Bubbles, Tandem will receive love, attention, and the chance to find a forever home where his blindness will never be a barrier to happiness. His story serves as a reminder of the resilience of animals and the transformative power of kindness. Tandem’s new chapter is just beginning, and it’s one full of hope and promise.
The Bigger Picture
Tandem’s story highlights a broader issue in Kentucky and similar areas, where hunting dogs are often treated as tools rather than companions. Many face neglect, injury, and abandonment when they can no longer perform.
At Cuddle Clones, we’re committed to changing this narrative by providing resources and support for animals like Tandem. Every purchase you make contributes to our mission of saving 3,000 pets in 2025, ensuring more animals like Tandem get a chance to heal and find loving homes.
