Meet Abby: A Journey of Healing

As part of our "Saving 3000 Pets at Risk in 2025" campaign, Abby’s story is one of courage and transformation. Through the unwavering commitment of Kentucky Saving Them Together, this once-terrified dog found hope, healing, and a family to call her own.

Terrified and Alone

Abby, a young pit bull mix, came to Kentucky Saving Them Together from the Lincoln County Shelter in Kentucky. This shelter, thanks to its incredible efforts over the past five years, has achieved a virtually no-kill status. However, in a moment of crisis when space and resources were stretched thin, they reached out for help to save Abby—a shelter favorite but one who was deeply scarred by her past.

When Abby was picked up, it was clear she had endured severe abuse. She was so terrified that the shelter staff had to physically carry her to the car. In her kennel, she trembled uncontrollably, crying and shaking, paralyzed by fear. She even urinated on herself—a heartbreaking testament to the trauma she had endured.

A Safe Haven

Abby spent the next four months at the farm run by Kentucky Saving Them Together, where she began her journey to recovery. In the beginning, her fear of humans was overwhelming, and she struggled to trust anyone.

Kyle, a skilled dog trainer who oversees the day-to-day care of the dogs, took Abby under his wing. To help her regain confidence, Kyle’s own dogs acted as teachers, showing Abby how to trust humans and rediscover the joys of simply being a dog. Over time, Abby began to open up. She wagged her tail, played with the other dogs, and cautiously approached humans—a remarkable transformation for a dog who had once been too afraid to move.

A New Family and a Fresh Start

After months of patient care and love, Abby was ready for her forever home. Thanks to Brittany’s dedication, Abby was matched with a wonderful family in New York. This family, with children and a friendly dog named Brody, was the perfect fit for Abby.

When Abby first arrived, she was naturally hesitant. She sought comfort in her crate, overwhelmed by the new environment. But in just a few days, Abby began to show signs of trust and joy. She started playing with Brody, building a bond with her new furry sibling. By the second night, she had snuggled into bed with her humans, finally understanding what it meant to feel safe and loved.

The Power of Love and Patience

Abby’s journey from a terrified, abused dog to a cherished family member is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of love and patience. Through the efforts of Kentucky Saving Them Together, Abby’s life was transformed, and she now has the chance to live the happy, carefree life every dog deserves.
